Concrete Sealer

A quality concrete sealer is a vital component for a quality concrete job. The concrete sealer makes concrete resistant to weather, exposures to water—yes, concrete is durable and is meant to handle the elements, but long exposures can break down nearly any building material—abrasions, and deicing salt. A quality concrete sealer can even protect the surface from stains—even grease and oil stains.

When a concrete sealer is applied correctly it enhances the beauty of concrete, and the concrete surface will be easier to clean. But all of this relies on correct application. Here are a few tips to get the job done right.

Step one is to prepare the surface of the concrete. Anything, including dirt, oil, and grease should be removed immediately—never apply a sealer to concrete that is dirty or stained. When concrete is dirty or stained the sealer will not adhere to the concrete.

Step two is to apply the sealer, and there are two appropriate ways to do it. You can either use a roller or a sprayer. The application tool you use will depend on the type of sealer—water based or solvent—and the manufacturer will likely recommend the appropriate tool for the product.

When you either roll-on or spray-on the sealer, make sure that the temperature is above fifty-degrees. That temperature should stay at or above fifty degrees at the time the sealer is applied and should hold at or above that temperature for twenty-four hours after application.
